Dyslexia Support

What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia mainly affects the development of literacy skills such as reading, writing and spelling. Short term memory, mathematical ability, concentration levels, personal organisation and the ability to put things in sequence may also be affected.

What are we doing to support members of our community with dyslexia?

NWI BLT strives to empower members of our community to improve services for others in the area. We have many examples of how well this is happening and our dyslexia support group is one of those.

Local resident & Diversity 2 Unity youth group member, Mal Pearson, recognised the lack of support for children with dyslexia and wanted to take action. Mal was diagnosed with the condition as a child and he and his family know first hand just how hard it can be to get vital support. Mal is now almost 20 and yet we are still hearing this story today from a lot of parents. It sounds as though not enough has changed.

Mal has been working with us to provide a platform for those with the condition to discuss concerns and worries about dyslexia with children & young people and help them to understand what dyslexia is and to work towards improving support for their families.

Before NWI BLT can commit to placing community funds to anything we look for as much up to date evidence as we can. For that reason we put together a short survey. Thank you to all that have already completed it. To read more about Mals aims click on the following link; Dyslexia support

Resident members are now meeting on a monthly basis with organisations such as the Suffolk Dyslexia Association, with specialist dyslexia teachers and adults living with the condition to forge a plan of action to ensure that Mals dream becomes a reality. It won’t be a quick process because it has to be the right support delivered in the right way.

Suffolk Dyslexia Association is a small local charity which was formed in 1981. They give information and support to parents of school age children and adults about dyslexia.

The Dyslexia Shop in Felixstowe  is a family run business based in Felixstowe, Suffolk which stocks thousands of carefully selected products to help people with Dyslexia and special educational needs / learning difficulties.
